KYANKWANZI — The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kyankwanzi, Sharon Ankunda, has announced that the residents of Kiyuuni in Gayaza Sub-county have been successfully resettled back onto their land after a government compensation deal with the landlord.
Ankunda confirmed that the compensation process has been completed and that the land titles for the resettled residents are now being issued. She explained that the allocation of titles will be based on the size of land each individual occupies.
This move follows a controversial eviction that took place between February 28 and March 3, 2022, which had led to the displacement of numerous families in the area. The eviction had sparked widespread public outcry, with many residents expressing concerns over their lack of compensation and the uncertainty regarding their future living conditions.
In her statement, Ankunda assured the public that the resettlement process is being handled fairly, and that the government is committed to ensuring that the affected families regain their rightful land and properties.
“We are currently in the process of issuing the land titles. Each resident will receive a title for the land they occupy. We are ensuring that the entire resettlement process is done in a transparent and systematic manner,” Ankunda stated.
The announcement was met with a sense of relief from the residents who had been displaced by the eviction and were left in limbo for over a year. Many had been living in temporary shelters and struggling to secure stable livelihoods.
