A 14-year-old schoolgirl from Kabale District whose determination to reach school during heavy rain captured national attention has received a full education sponsorship from city socialite Sheilah Gashumba.
The girl, identified as Angel Blessings Atuhaire, a Primary Seven pupil at Kengoma Day Primary School, went viral after a video showed her cycling to school early in the morning despite torrential rainfall. Dressed in her purple uniform and blue sweater with a school bag strapped on her back, she was seen pushing through difficult weather conditions on her bicycle.
The clip, first recorded by a motorist, quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread admiration and prompting calls from the public to identify and support the young learner.
Moved by the video, Gashumba publicly pledged to support the girl’s education after she was identified.
“I’m willing and ready to pay for school fees and boarding fees for the young girl plus anything she needs for school until she finishes university. When God blesses you, you bless others,” she said.
She added that the gesture was intended to ensure the child’s future is secured through uninterrupted education.
Sources indicate that Angel is the daughter of Moses Nfitumukiza, a boda boda rider based in Kabale District.
The sponsorship, which will cover her education up to university level, has been widely welcomed by the public, with many Ugandans praising the intervention as a life-changing act of kindness.
Social media users described the move as inspirational, saying it highlights both the resilience of rural learners and the importance of community support in improving access to education for vulnerable children.
Education advocates have also welcomed the development, noting that sustained support for such children can significantly improve school retention and performance in rural areas.
