The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has withdrawn its earlier endorsement of Speaker Anita Annet Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa for the leadership of the 12th Parliament, signaling a major shift in the political dynamics surrounding the race for Parliament’s top offices.

In a statement dated May 12, 2026, and signed by the PLU General Secretary, David Kabanda, the organisation announced that its directive issued on March 11, 2026 endorsing Among and Tayebwa had been “retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”

The development was followed by public remarks from the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who openly endorsed Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the Speakership of the 2026–2031 Parliament.

Posting on his X platform, Gen. Muhoozi dismissed reports of a contest for the Speakership, saying the decision had already been made.

“There is no Speakership battle. Our God Jesus Christ won that battle a long time ago. We already have our new Speaker. Supported by UPDF,” Gen. Muhoozi wrote.

He further described Oboth-Oboth as the best-performing minister in government over the last five years.

“He has been the best Minister in our government for the past 5 years. I want to be the first to endorse him for Speaker of Parliament (2026-2031). God bless Hon. Oboth-Oboth!” he posted.

Gen. Muhoozi also sought to calm speculation surrounding Deputy Speaker Tayebwa, saying he remained in good standing.

“Hon. Tayebwa is a very good man. He is my younger brother. He has no problems. He is protected!” he added.

The latest developments have sparked renewed debate within political circles over the future leadership of Parliament and the influence of political groupings ahead of the next parliamentary term.

The Speakership race is expected to attract significant interest within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), with political observers closely watching possible alignments ahead of the opening of the 12th Parliament in 2026.
