Uganda Revenue Authority has called for stronger tax compliance and professionalism within Uganda’s insurance sector, warning against the growing challenge of unlicensed insurance agents operating illegally.
Speaking during an engagement with insurance professionals, Mr. Julius Nandeeba, Manager of the Financial and Insurance Sector at the Large Taxpayers Office under the Domestic Taxes Department at URA, delivered a presentation titled “Taxation: Understanding the Wider Tax Compliance and Implications Towards the Agent’s Services.”
In his remarks, Nandeeba emphasized the critical role insurance agents play in driving the growth of the insurance industry, describing them as an essential distribution channel that contributes significantly to revenue generation and employment creation.
He noted that tax compliance should not only be viewed as a legal requirement but also as a professional responsibility that directly supports national development and economic transformation.
“When we talk about succession, we should not see it only as a legal obligation; instead, we should ask ourselves how our success contributes to national growth,” Nandeeba said.
The URA official further expressed concern over the increasing number of unlicensed individuals operating as insurance agents, warning that such practices undermine public trust and threaten the credibility and integrity of the insurance industry.
According to Nandeeba, the Insurance Act only permits duly licensed agents to conduct insurance business, stressing that any unlicensed operations are illegal and fall outside the country’s regulatory framework.
He urged insurance professionals to remain compliant with both tax and industry regulations, saying this is essential in strengthening public confidence, protecting consumers, and ensuring sustainable sector growth.
The remarks come at a time when regulators and industry stakeholders are intensifying efforts to formalize Uganda’s insurance sector and improve compliance standards across financial services industries.
