Luzira, Kampala — Dade Nursery and Primary School is gaining recognition for its practical and skills-based approach to education, with educators and parents praising the institution for nurturing children into thinkers, creators and innovators beyond the traditional classroom model.

The school recently showcased its unique learning philosophy during its annual exhibition held in Luzira, where pupils demonstrated hands-on projects in science, baking, crocheting, music, chess and other vocational activities.

Unlike conventional academic exhibitions centered largely on theory, the event highlighted how learners at Dade actively engage with real-life concepts through practical experiences designed to build confidence, creativity and problem-solving skills.

At the center of the exhibition were live science demonstrations featuring three-dimensional models of the human heart, skeleton, kidney, skin, simple machines and energy transformation systems. The models, developed with support from River Flow International, allowed pupils to explain scientific concepts with confidence and understanding.

“Our learners now understand science because they do science. They touch it, build it, test it and explain it,” one teacher said during the exhibition.
School administrators say the practical learning approach has significantly improved comprehension, classroom participation and learner confidence by helping children directly interact with what they study.
The exhibition also featured baking sessions where pupils demonstrated pastry-making skills, showcasing how vocational training has been integrated into school life at an early stage.
Elsewhere, pupils participated in chess contests that emphasized critical thinking, patience and strategic decision-making, while music performances involving drums, recorders and other instruments highlighted the school’s focus on holistic development.
Visitors were equally impressed by crochet displays created by learners, with children producing mats, decorative pieces and small garments using colorful patterns and designs.
Parents who attended the event described the exhibition as eye-opening, with many expressing surprise at the level of confidence and creativity demonstrated by their children.
“I didn’t know my child could bake or explain a science concept in detail. The school is opening their minds to what they can become,” one parent remarked.
Teachers at Dade Nursery and Primary School say the impact of the hands-on approach is now visible both at school and within the community, with learners applying acquired skills at home and sharing knowledge with siblings and neighbors.
Education experts say practical learning is increasingly becoming essential in preparing children for a rapidly changing world where creativity, innovation and problem-solving are highly valued.
Through its emphasis on science, arts, vocational skills, music and games, Dade Nursery and Primary School is positioning itself as a model institution focused not only on academic success but also on developing confident and skilled future leaders.
